Department of Epidemiology and Global Health (EpIGH), Umeå University

The Department of Epidemiology and Global Health (EpIGH), Umeå University. EpiGH, Umeå is an international, multidisciplinary research and teaching environment located within Umeå University’s Faculty of Medicine. Founded in 1986, it now has around 80 people from all over the world working in the department, with a shared mission to contribute to equitable and sustainable improvements in health and welfare across the globe. Research falls into three broad profiles:” Emerging global health challenges”, Health policy and systems”, and ”Northern Sweden health and welfare”. We have well-established collaborations with Region Västerbotten and the Swedish Public Health Agency including mutual interests in innovations for local health systems strengthening. Her MPH and Ph.D. programs attract students from Sweden and more than 20 countries worldwide each year.

School of Public Health, University of the Western Cape

The school has been in existence for 27 years and is a well-recognized training and research institution in South Africa, the African continent, and globally. The school currently has200 post-graduate (diploma, masters, and doctoral) students, half of whom are from outside south Africa, and run a large winter school (continuing professional development)program. The school’s research strengths are in the areas of health policy and systems, chronic non-communicable diseases, food environments, the social determinants of health, sexual and reproductive health, and pharmaceutical public health; with a cross-cutting focus on households and community health systems. The school of Public Health at the University of Western Cape house’s two competitively awarded national research chairs: Health Systems, Complexity, and Social Change, and Health Systems Governance. They collaborate with policymakers at local, provincial, and national levels on a range of health system issues; with neighboring universities in the Western Cape

(www.chesai.org/); and with partners in a number of African countries and global health institutions. They are active members of the international society Health Systems Global and in various WHO advisory bodies.

School of Public Health, University of Zambia

The school has extensive experience in community and formal health systems as well as health policy research and programming. Key research and programs that the School has worked on in collaboration with Umeå University include analysis of the integration process of the national community health assistant program in Zambia and evaluation of the integration process of adolescent-friendly sexual and reproductive interventions into the community health systems in Zambia (funded by the Swedish Research Council). In partnership with Western Cape University in South Africa, and Umea University, the School of Public also conducted a study on mapping key actors, points of integration, and conditions shaping the integration process of community health assistant-driven sexual and reproductive health services in the community health system in rural districts in Zambia.

Makerere University

Established, in 1922, Makerere University is one of the oldest Universities in Africa and is currently ranked the 2nd best in research in Africa. It was the first university in East Africa to offer degrees in public health and it remains the leading School of Public Health in the region. Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH) is one of the four Schools under the Makerere University College of Health Sciences, a constituent College of Makerere University. MakSPH conducts research and provides consultation services to the Government of Uganda and various national and international health organizations as well as bilateral and multilateral agencies involved in health. It has four major departments of a) Health Policy, Planning and Management, b) Epidemiology and Biostatistics, c) Disease Control and Environmental Health, and d) Community Health and Behavioral Sciences.  MakSPH has a good track record of Local, regional and global collaborations and partnerships and has worked extensively with various UN agencies, US Government, and other global funding agencies.

School of Public Health and Social Sciences, Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS)

It is the nation’s premier in teaching, consultancies, and research in health and related disciplines. The University was established in 1956 as a school of Medicine and has so grown to five schools, six directorates, and two institutes. The School of Public Health and Social Sciences (SPHSS)- https://sphss.muhas.ac.tz/ is one of the five schools. SPHSS is composed of seven academics (including research and consultancy) Departments namely Behavioral Sciences, Community Health, Development Studies, Epidemiology/Biostatistics, Environmental and Occupational Health, and Parasitology/Medical Entomology and Department of Bioethics. SPHSS offers an excellent environment for national and international collaboration where community, laboratory, and social sciences are integrated to address the broad issues of public health. The school works closely with the Ministries responsible for Health and local government administration to formulate and analyze different policies and strategies in the country.
